Self-narrative stories. The «Rabito phenomenon». between history and anthropology, literature and public history. Vincenzo Rabito (1899-1981), Sicilian, without ever having attended a day of school, left a memorial that has become a literary case (Terra matta, Einaudi 2007), in which he, through an “invented language”, told his story and through it that of Italy during the twentieth century. Fifteen years later a new memorial (Il romanzo della vita passata, Einaudi 2022) relaunches attention to this author who is now known even outside the peninsula. The discussion is animated here by historians of the contemporary age and literary historians. The threads of a contagious narrative seduction are re-knotted, which offers itself as an exemplary application of a Public History capable of involving a large audience.
