I am very grateful to all of my fellow-contributors to this issue who have freely provided information and have helped me to appreciate Terra matta much more fully than I could have done on my own. All readers of the book also owe a particular debt to Vincenzo Rabito’s three sons, Turi, Tano and Giovanni, for their generosity in agreeing to make available to the widest possible public a text that includes harsh words about their closest relatives and which many families might well have preferred to keep private.
